All applicants must be fluent in English (ICAO level 4 or above), hold an ICAO ATPL, 1st Class Medical and be eligible to qualify for a UAE residency visa.

Minimum requirements for B737 type rated captains

- B737-300 to 900 (NG/EFIS) endorsed and current (within the last 24 months)
- A minimum of 5,000 hours total flying time
- A minimum of 1,000 hours in command of B737-300 to 900 (NG/EFIS) type aircraft
- A minimum of 1,500 hours in command of a multi-crew, multi-engine aircraft in excess of 10 tonnes operating weight

Minimum requirements for B737 type rated first officers

- B737-300 to 900 (NG/EFIS) endorsed and current (within the last 24 months)
- A minimum of 1,500 hours total flying time
- A minimum of 500 hours on B737-300 to 900 (NG/EFIS) type aircraft

Minimum requirements for non-B737 type rated pilots

- Captains – must have 5,000 hours total flying time, of which 1,500 hours must be in command of modern (EFIS) multi-crew, multi-engine jet aircraft over 55 tonnes operating weight
- First Officers – must have 2,500 hours total flying time, of which 1,000 hours must have been gained on modern (EFIS) multi-crew, multi-engine aircraft over 10 tonnes operating weight (preference will be given to those with PIC time)

Established by the Dubai government and launching services in mid-2009, the Boeing 737-800 operator has been slowly forming its own operational infrastructure, separate from its bigger sister. Based at Dubai International’s budget Terminal 2, it has taken delivery of 16 of 54 737-800s, flying mostly routes to the Middle East, Indian subcontinent and central Asia.

The investment of $20 million in the new maintenance division means Flydubai will now carry out all its maintenance in-house rather than relying on Emirates Engineering. Chief executive Ghaith Al Ghaith says the move is an “example of our growing maturity as an airline”.

Flydubai has recruited more than 75 engineers. Head of maintenance and engineering Mick Hills acknowledges that the project had to be completed quickly. “Many people said we wouldn’t be able to do it, but once again Flydubai has proved the doubters wrong,” he says. “This has been a huge investment and we have worked hard to ensure we have got it right first time.”

In second place was Dubai-based full service airline Emirates, which just pipped Air Arabia with 18% of the vote – 13% behind Flydubai. Sharjah-based Air Arabia took third place in the poll with 16% of the vote – some 15% behind Flydubai.

Missing out on a podium finish was Abu Dhabi-based full service carrier Etihad Airways with just 7% of the vote, 24% behind Flydubai and 11% behind Emirates. Even when broken down by their home market, Abu Dhabi residents still thought Flydubai offered the best value for money.

Dan Healy, the CEO of the Dubai-based research company Real Opinions, which conducted the research, commented, “The regional airline industry has gone through a transformation in recent years, emulating what happened in the regional flights sector in Europe at the turn of the millennium. The prolific growth of low cost airlines and the resultant consolidation in this industry segment has naturally created winners and losers, but passengers are the real winners as they now have more choice to better match their budget and required service levels.”

In a further boost for the aviation industry, the introduction of low cost airlines also appears to have grown the overall market as 87% of the 538 respondents agreed that “Cheaper airfares encourage me to fly more often in the region”. This is backed up with a sense of adventure to journey where they haven’t been before with 86% supporting the statement ”I like experiencing new cultures and adventures”.

The parallel growth of the Internet in the Middle East has also come at an opportune time for low cost airlines; more than 90% of respondents agreed that “There are greater cost savings and choice when you search and book flights online”.

Healy added, “We have been very active in the region researching the evolution of the Internet and advertising practices from a consumer’s perspective. Our past research has shown that 72% of UAE Internet users have purchased online and flights are top of the list.”

However, the research indicates there are still travellers who prefer to deal with travel agents, and on average 67% of travellers reported travel agents now also include low cost airlines in their quotes.

Ghaith Al Ghaith, CEO of Flydubai, said, “The launch of our car rental service is another example of offering passengers more choice every time they travel. This new facility also makes it more convenient and therefore a little less stressful for people to find some of the most affordable rates no matter where they fly.”

The service, provided in conjunction with CarTrawler, follows the launches earlier this year of the Flydubai bus, which provides a direct link between Dubai Terminal 2 and Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, and travel insurance packages.

Flydubai is dedicated to making travel more accessible and affordable, taking every step to lower costs and pass on those savings to customers. All fares are one way and inclusive of taxes, that includes one piece of hand baggage weighing up to 7kg and a small handbag or laptop bag. Customers then pay for the optional extras they wish to receive, such as checked baggage or a seat with extra legroom.

“We are just about to hand over the keys to flydubai,” said Paul Griffiths.

“T2 has undergone somewhat of a transformation over the last few months. Not only have we created additional capacity but the quality has been ugraded and it is now better than it has ever been.”

Griffiths explained the low-cost airline is not exclusive to T2 but a segregated area has been created in order to ease congestion.

“Flydubai will have its own zone and this has been possible due to its route structure and the timing of its flights..

“T2’s refurbishment is expected to help ease congestion when the new airline launched,” he added.

Griffiths was unable to say how many extra passengers would pass through the terminal once flydubai opened for business, but said that figures would be released at the end of June.

Currently the terminal is capable of handling 25 million passengers a year.

‘For many years the Government of Dubai has recognised the need for a low cost carrier to serve our country,’ said Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman of flydubai.

‘When we placed our historic order for 50 737-800 NG aircraft from Boeing at Farnborough last year, we said that we would receive the first aircraft in May 2009 and begin flights soon after. Today we are delivering on that promise with the unveiling of our first aircraft, following close on the heels of the announcement of our first flight, which will be on June 1.

‘ The unveiling ceremony revealed the aircraft to a crowd of industry experts, staff and media and gave the first real glimpse of the airline’s striking livery. The bright tones of blue and orange, personally selected by Sheikh Mohammed, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, were chosen to reflect the colours and the coastline of Dubai.

The orange reflects the sun, sand and the warmth of the people of Dubai, while the blue reflects the endless blue skies and the sparkling blue seas that Dubai is famous for.

Already, flydubai has announced four destinations, Beirut, Amman, Damascus and Alexandria.

flydubai will operate from an enhanced and modernised Terminal 2 on the north side of Dubai International Airport.
